I am a resident of Norcot Road and have just received your Council Topics. You have brought up the state of roads and pavements in Tilehurst, which I would agree are in a parlous state, both as regards surface and in places, the camber. I do not drive, do not use a mobility scooter, but I do have a disability, which affects my walking. With this in mind, I am absolutely amazed you have suggested that it is quite acceptable for motor vehicles to park on pavements as long as drivers leave a gap of 1m. There are more than enough hazards to contend with when walking along the pavements in Tilehurst without giving inconsiderate drivers the misguided impression that the pavement is for both vehicles and pedestrians and that it is quite all right to park up on the footpath because our local Councillor has actually suggested, in writing, just such a course of action. It is also worth bearing in mind that some of the pavements in this area are probably no more than 1m in width.
Dear Ricky, I live in Weald Rise and am newly paralysed from the waist down (9 months) and an electric chair is now my mode of transport. I agree that the pathways are not good and the camber is perilous in places and its better to go out into the road. I write to ask if a safe wheelchair/electric chair crossing over the Oxford Road at the bottom of Weald Rise would be possible. At present the ramp leading down to the Oxford Road on the south side is impossible to access as its way to steep and would pitch chair into the road, whilst the ramp on the north side is extremely steep and scary to drive up. The bus stop is on the north or opposite side to Weald Rise it also has the smooth cycle path on the north side which makes for a smoother ride to Waitrose. If possible would like to speak as to the best way I can approach the Council for safe access/crossing of Oxford Road for wheelchairs. The nearest pedestrian crossing is 1/4 mile down the road.
